New handmade wool soumak
Age: New
Size:185 x 125
This handmade soumak rug has a framed geometric design with a rich combination of greens, blues and pinks. The soumak technique gives it a thick and feel, and more detail in the pattern.
Soumak was originally associated with the Caucasian town of the name that was known for fine weft-wrapped rugs, however the technique can be found in other Oriental regions and countries such as Egypt, Peru. Some fragments have been traced back to 2000BC. Soumak is a type of flat weave rug, stronger and thicker than a kilim, with a smooth front face and a ragged back. The wefts are wrapped around the warps in various combinations to give a more detailed pattern across the top of the rug. The difference from a kilim can be seen below.
