Whatever stage you’re at, here’s a few ideas to help you along.
First have a look at ‘10 Tips on Buying a Handmade Rug.’ Then consider these questions:
- What size are you interested in? Is there a range that would work for you? Carpets have standard sizes…few are round or square. Standard sizes include: 160×240, 250×350, 2×3 and 3×4.
- What is your budget?
- Is there a style or colour you are trying to match? Or colours or styles you want to avoid?
- Natural fibre, a blend of wool/cotton, a poly blend or a 100% poly carpet?
- Handmade or machine made, traditional or modern, new, pre-loved, vintage or antique?
- Do you have some photos of rugs you know you like?
A combination of these factors helps to trim down the range, but flexibility is useful.
- Can you spend a bit more to get the size or quality you want?
- You might have wanted a handmade rug, we also have beautiful machine made wool and poly carpets. You could look at these if have a smaller budget.
- Save for a handmade rug, it will always find a place in your home, even when you restyle over the years.
- Handmade carpets are not always exactly sized and may have imperfect edges, irregularity of colour and uneven weave/knot work – don’t let this put you off.
- Many modern homes have simple neutral colour schemes, and contemporary rugs that match. Consider a statement piece for your room, or something that meets you halfway with subdued colours and light motifs to create interest.
- If you are flexible with size, but looking for a specific colour scheme, or need a specific size and colour, it can take longer to a rug that is right for you, or compromises may have to be made.
Price is not everything. Handmade carpets improve with age, are durable and more forgiving with spills, dirt and traffic. They are made by skilled craftspeople who take time and care in their work, and follow generational traditions which gives them unmatched character, so they really are a wonderful long term investment.
It’s good to keep your mind open, sometimes we find a carpet that sings to us, that we would never have gone looking for. Other times we need to stick to our parameters until we find the one worth waiting for.
Most handmade rugs are unique, so it can be difficult to locate exactly the one you saw on the internet. Some styles are popular and similarities exist between items, others vary in colour and detail within the same style. Occasionally matching pairs are available, and carpet and runner combinations common. With machine made rugs, it is much easier to match colours, styles and sizes.
While our range of carpets can be viewed online, there is no substitute for seeing and touching carpets for yourself.
