Chobi Rugs: Traditional and Modern. The Ziegler company is famous for styling these carpets for western tastes in 1883. By adapting Persian designs, Ziegler’s legacy lives on, the rugs are a happy marriage of traditional design and modern taste.

‘Chobi’ comes from the Farsi word ‘chob’ meaning ‘wool.’ The rugs are often from areas in Northern Afghanistan, but also made in Iran, China, and Pakistan. Known for their fine quality, a medium-sized rug takes between 12 to 14 months to weave.

The earthy colours range from browns to reds, beige, blues and greens, making them ideal in a modern home. Irregularities and varying shades are a result of the natural dyes, giving them a rustic but pleasing look. While the traditional motifs add a classic touch reminiscent of a bygone era.

Another feature that makes them a popular choice is the softness, which is the result residual lanolin in the wool.

The design generally includes a border with a large central pattern and floral theme, although they may incorporate animals and landscape icons. While they are carpets, they also make striking wall hangings.
